From sketch to digital art, Ken Whitaker loves to draw! He graduated a long time ago to use digital drawing tools like Sketchbook Pro, Illustrator, Painter, OmniGraffle (goodbye, Visio!), Glyphs, and Photoshop.
Product brochures and infocards
To market an upcoming workshop, a brochure was needed. Initially, the scope and intended audience were clearly identified. After several sketches, a combination of typography and illustrations was turned into art that could be printed in high-resolution CMYK (or downloaded in lower-resolution RGB).
Infographics
Why write pages of explanation when a single, informative graphic can do the quick?
In the Art of Technical Project Management textbook under development, the three pages on the left explain the components in every lesson chapter. The infographic (on the right) communicates the same information in an easier-to-understand format.

Cover design

The art of illustration starts with a concept and a desired style and look. Visual communication can range from sketches to drawings or scalable vector art. Also, using digital techniques can turn a boring photograph into a woodcut, stylized look that leaves an impression.
Typography and font design
Font design is a rare form of illustration that has taken off with killer font editing digital tools like Glyphs. For The Nerd Herd Game, we created Nerdodyne. We’re working on other fonts, too.
